It's a wonderful record, but perhaps too close in sound and spirit to Steve McQueen for comfort -- From Langley Park, for all its flaws, is a much more adventurous effort, and with the benefit of hindsight, it seems reasonable to assume that Paddy McAloon wished not to stick with the tried-and-true but instead attempt something new and different, successful or not. Let's hope the production doesn't swamp the songs on the new one. So glad to hear about a new album coming, there was some great music on The Gunman mixed sons some less than great.

However, Protest Songs is bright and edgy, a huge disappointment as far as SQ snogs concerned. It seems that Patrick McAloon and the band have lots of music which is still unreleased - this might explain the 7-years hiatus after "Jordan: Its a top tier sprout album that is better than Langley. Prefab Sprout - Protest Songs
Not for me, McQueen is a masterpiece and Jordan not far behind. Guy ENov 4, Ryan LuxNov 25, This lp is easily as essential as 'Steve McQueen' in the Prefab Sprout canon; more gutsy, but with that same dreamy wit giving the record an analytic and humourous edge.
This is such a strong album and showed a more mature songwriting approach, in my opinion; by that I mean a development from 'Steve McQueen' that wasn't so polished and pop-oriented as 'Langley Park' or 'Jordan'. By no means a lost masterpiece, it's still an essential piece of the puzzle.
